Christmas 2019 closely followed by the 2020 New Year celebrations are now a distant memory. Come this weekend, we are in February, so what is the new number plate for 2020 and why is it not here yet?
Well, every year there is a release of two number plates. The first is released on 1st March and will be the 20 plate, e.g. XX20 XXX. This will be applied to all new vehicles registered from that date until the end of August. Then from 1st September, the new 70 plate will be applied to all new cars until end of February next year.
he current number plate format came out in 2001 on 1st September as the 51 plate. This made perfect sense at the time, as it was the mid-way through the registration calendar and the number 5 makes a great mid number. So, the 5 refers to the September registration and the 1 refers to being registered in 2001.
But by 2010 all of the fifty something numbers had been used and this is the reason for the current 60 something plates and soon to be 70 somethings. This will continue all the way until 1st March 2050 when we will see another change.
The great news is you do not have to wait until 1st March to secure your new number plate. The new number plate will be allocated on vehicles registered on or after 1st March. So, if your new car has an order time which takes a few weeks, it may be necessary to order now so that it is here in time. Alternatively, should we have a car in stock today, we are likely able to reserve it until 1st March, just so long as you can wait until then for your new car.
There haven’t always been two number plates in a year. Prior to 1999, there was only one per year, which came out on 1st August. Due to the demand on new cars on the run up to August and a disparity of new car sales for the rest of the year, it was decided that there would be two new number plates per year. One on 1st March and the other 1st September.
